Urinstinkt – Instinct Primaire (Basic Instinct)

Yet another 20th of the month and here are my new set of scribblings on ‘SEX’, a subject that is generally considered a taboo in this modern era, surprisingly an absolute contrast to the sacred ways it was embraced during contemporary India. The scribblings are inspired by the Sadhguru’s recent call for freeing our ancient temples

When I first heard this phrase,
“Free and save Indian temples”
I found it a bit strange and lumber!
Were the temples in for a tumble?
because of our neglect & slumber
Or was it a collapse of our values
that dogmas and hypocrisy have
become a way of life that’s not only
shallow but continues to devalue!

Once upon a time these temples
were not just centres of spirituality!
But the symbol of free will and worth
that emerged in the depicted sexuality!
Men & Women shown in explicit yet
creative acts of passionate sensuality!
That after almost five thousand years
of barbaric attacks, weathering, & rust
they continue draw response as varied
as wow to embarrassment & disgust!

The ‘sex’ on temple walls and doors
has to be an anomaly for modernity!
A word that was considered sacred
and a must for the human existence
is now questioned with abnormality!
I wonder as to which other civilisation
ever related with the power of sex
as utmost regard for indigenisation!

So ladies and gentlemen!
Once upon an ancient time…
in her own mind and body
She was always free to attract
and get attracted in this race,
She was free to celebrate sex
in complete freedom and face!

That was women’s empowerment
Isn’t it a feeling of bewilderment?
If sex underlines human existence
Who the hell is society to teach her
the sexual morality with persistence!
If you call this ‘life’ as a sacred thing
As to how can you act as dumb-ass
in accepting ‘sex’ as a sacred being!

Whether its Female Genocide or AIDS
or the horrifying acts of the brutal rapes

Three manifestations of moral society
Are we supposed to oppose or brace!

Not only women, are not the men
also victims of this human history!
As they are raised by caged women
and consider oppression as a victory!

From the contemporary liberal times
of that great Indian ancient culture…
Should we really feel proud about
the paradigm shift, as modern times?
Or take a pragmatic approach to
redress the malfunctioning of society
for the sake of futuristic nation times!

We are born and nurtured by society
and since childhood, are taught to
suppress our desires for conformity!
We are restricted to admit pleasure
and even discard the live-in definition
till we marry and explore the treasure!
As if marriage is a licence to have sex
in order to protect us from the censure!

Isn’t each day seems to be first April,
the Fool’s day in our estranged life!
We may pretend liberation in thinking
but to me, it seems deceived paradise!

This is really amusing that Society
for the sake of avoiding a disorder
Made a protocol, that is propriety!
the one that seems to be broader
yet naive enough to protect our
‘Self-Esteem’ and ‘Instinct-Primaire’!

  1. I think it addresses to the aging generation and not the current, which has a more rounded take on the issue. I am talking about the city dwellers and not the society as a whole. But for a few exceptions even in the so called western modern societies “all is not well “.

  4. Many temples in India depict erotic carvings on outer wall. The outer world of desire and the inner world of spirituality. One needs to understand this deep meaning. Beautifully penned. Kudos

  5. Sex which is actually sacred and leads to creation of an individual, has been made a taboo to even speak about openly in our society. Sir, you very eloquently expressed your views about it. It was insightful as well as thought provoking. Excellent write up!!

  6. Bhog and sambhog are the basic desires of any human being and therefore a person can go to spirituality only when he satisfy these needs and that’s the reason in our temples these pictures or depictions are always on the outer wall.and the lower floors of temples. When a person rise above all these attains spirituality.Alas, most spiritual gurus keep.professing spirituality while they remain confined to the outfall and lower floors of temples.A well.written piece

  7. Very well written piece..It is a fact that a simple and natural act of love and pleasure was made into a taboo over time …I however have my doubts on the issue of woman empowerment in ancient India in terms of sex…She was used as an object of desire with kings having thousands of concubines and having a free run with all of them.. I could not find a mention of any queen in my limited exposure to history who had a 100 men at her disposal unlike her king …but again I am not a student of history…
Definitely a lovely piece touching a topic which needs to be discussed more openly and history would certainly come handy

    1. Thanks for so much
appreciation… Coming back to your question, your understanding of the history is great but the era I talk about is an era of raw Hindu era, that is even prior to Vedic era…. When the sex was really sacred. That is about 5000 years ago… Your interpretation is about the period much later.
